GENEALOGY OF AMERICAN WELTYS FROM LAUPERSWIL, CANTON BERN, SWITZERLAND EARLIER ANCESTORS and GENETIC GENEALOGY The GENEALOGY page shows the grandfather of Niklaus Wälti b.1764 to be Peter b.1679, who married Elsbeth Lüthi in 1705. The father of Peter b.1679 is also named Peter according to the baptism record, and if he were about the same age as the mother Magdalena Leuenberger [Schönholzer], then his birthdate would be around 1645. According to their later place of residence, his baptism should have been recorded in Lützelflüh (this was before the citizenship law of 1676). The PETER WÄLTI OVERVIEW spreadsheet shows baptism data for all Peter Wältis from Lauperswil, Rüderswil und Lützelflüh born from 1640 to 1695, along with probable families of parents and children. While individual families (father, mother, children) can usually be identified from baptism and marriage records, these records generally do not show the birthdates of the parents involved, or of the people being married. Connections between generations are therefore dificult to establish, and assemby of extended "family trees" requires the use of indirect evidence such as places of citizenship and residence, baptism witnesses, and/or other sources such as wills, contracts, court records, etc. More recently it has become possible to use y-dna analysis to provide evidence of relationships between generations. According to the overview spreadsheet, there were 2 Peter Wältis from Lützelflüh who were born between 1640 and 1650: (1) Peter b.~14.02.1641 with parents Christian Wälti and Ursula Känel, married in 1629 and (2) Peter b.~18.04.1634 with parents Peter Wälti und Elsbeth Meyer, married in 1618. It is not clear from currently-known evidence which are the actual parents of Peter b.1679, however there may be some grounds to prefer the second possibility based on baptism witnesses (? check with Peter). The y-dna match between the descendants of Peter b.1679 and the Peter b.~1695 who emigrated to America could also provide evidence to support one or the other possibility, if family trees linking the two branches can be identified. One such possibility is shown below. The ANTIETAM WEBSITE.shows a genealogy in which Hans Wälti b.1666 and Verena Geissbühler are the parents of Peter b.~1695 and Christian b.1688, who emigrated to America in 1727. This genealogy also shows Peter Walti b.1640 and Madleni Danner as the parents of Hans b.1666. No source references are given. The church records (according to the OVERVIEW spreadsheet) verify that a Hans Wälti of Lauperswil and Verena Geissbühler were married and had sons Christian b.1688 and Peter b.1691. The church records also show Peter Wälti and Magdalena Tanner as the parents of a son named Hans b.1666, but do not indicate whether or not this is the same Hans who married Verena Geissbühler. Another Hans b.1656 is also shown, the son of Hans Wälti and Madlen Roth, who would have been about the right age (27) to have married Verena Geissbühler in 1683. Hans b.1666 would have been somewhat young (17) according to the average marriage age at the time. If Hans b.1656 or Hans b.1666 is really the father of the Peter b.~1695 who emigrated to America in 1727, and if Peter b.1679 is really the grandfather of Niklaus, then according to the y-dna evidence, Hans and Peter should have a common forefather, who is likely to be within the first few prior generations. This forefather should in principle be found on the overview spreadsheet (or in earlier generations not shown), since Hans and Peter were both from Lauperswil. The table below shows one possible genealogy in which Hans b.1656 and Peter b.1679 have the same grandparents, namely Christen Wälti and Ursula Känel, married in 1629. In this scenario it was Hans b.1656 (son of Hans Wälti and Madlen Roth) who married Verena Geissbühler, rather than Hans b.1666 (son of Peter Walti and Madleni Danner) as shown in the Antietam genealogy. It is not clear from currently-known records which version, if either, is correct. If the parents of Peter b.1679 are actually Peter Wälti and Elsbeth Meyer, no possible common ancestor with Hans b.1656 (or 1666) has thusfar been identified. |
